Please experts on Canada vs US situation help with this.
A person lets say makes 100000 in US. His approx take home (after tax) would be lets say 70000, right? How much would he have to make in canada (Montreal) to keep par or do better than the salary in US. This is to understand the tax structure. Please try to give atleast three scenarios--

Why should we give big bucks to big names? Instead we can pay 50% to 75% of that to a bunch of fresh law school grads from Harvard or some other top law school and see what they can do?
This way we would help young talent and also give them a platform to get their name in the front and at the same time we are not under cutting on their fees. Saving money but cutting unnecessary cost is the name of the game.

If you see the entire post, you will see that the agenda is
1) Increasing GC numbers
2) Recapturing numbers and instituting permanent Rollover mechanisms
3) Eliminate country quotas
Part 1 and 2 would help everyone from around the world. While 3 would benefit citizens of a few countries more than others, all it is saying is STOP discriminating in employment based green cards on basis of country of origin. You are not BORN with skills and neither does being born in country A make you more SKILLED than being born in country B.
If you want to see 3 as being the reason to not participate, that you are implicitly condoning discrimination against people born in certain country even though you will benefit equally from 1 and 2.
Are you suggesting that IV's efforts would increase the wait times for ROW?

I have had my own experiences with these stalkers, one time I ran into a guy in Walmart and he asked "are you from south India" blah blah....then he asked me "do you have my phone number", I told him "I just met you and how do u expect me to have ur number".....then he asked my #, I gave him my old land line which was disconnected, he called immediately saying that he is giving his # to me, the call did'nt go through, he asked me why? I told him straight on the face to stop this amway business deals with me, he just ignored and rushed to another aisle.
As others said, if some desi smiles and talks to you (which is rare) the first thing you think is that he is from amway......:D

Maybe Indians don't have balls, but there is something called cultural exchange which every country share with each another. Now if SRK decides that US immigration has mistreated him and he decides not to enter US, world is not going to fall down. Recently I heard that HOLLYWOOD wants to come BOLLYWOOD to make investments, maybe out of bussiness sense HOLLYWOOD should support SRK. foreign income is tax free and keeps his Indian income in rupees lower (taxable).
One of the reason why he makes movies with storyline outside India and US being a big market he needs to go.
So as protest like Amitabh he should change his compensation structure so that he doesn't need movies with story line in US etc. Will he do it ?I dont think so !!!!!

I have no problem with any individual but I hate my ex employer and their class ( in no uncertain terms ). I was earning for them , but he and his wife used to behave like big boss to me.Why I shed no tears for them. They think themselves as Ambani but will not hire few good marketing folks who can bring projects from direct clients. There business model is like the following example ( joke ). A bihari gone to punjab and started working for sardarji for food and shelter.While he asked the sardarji for food , he said go that building eat as much you want and take this tifin box and pack some food for me too. Just tell them that I have sent you . After some time Bihari came to know that it was Gurudwara and food was lunger. I consider these body shop no different then that Sardarji. Opening a co ( body shop ) requires phone and outlook. WOW. The h1b rules allow a space for them. With this new rule , they are gone for good. Let me make it very clear , I hate body shopper . It is mere chance that they are from particular state. I fully sympathize with all H1B holder and again let me insist all deserving H1b people will be better off with this memo. EB1 India got 5,327 visas , EB2 India got 14,818 and EB3 India got 3,576 even though the quota was 2,803 for each preference.
As an example, I-485 pending for EB2 and EB3 India before 2006 are 17,835 and 46,334 respectively. Everything else being equal, you can take a guess how long it would take based how old the report was. Even if the report is from yesterday to be pessimistic and there are nuances, it gives some approximation unless the interpretation is totally wrong.

Canada immigration is simple & straight forward.
No expensive lawyers are required or any lengthy procedures. Just self do. Also look at the currency rate of US and Canada almost same... Tax is a little high but medical is fully covered.
You need to fill forms,send all your education, papers etc and LO ! you are done and get PR Card. Some of my friends got it in less than 2 yrs.

I can understand someone may get it done as backup but here it seems that some of the people are out to the mission .. And I have a problem there. If somebody is in really a bad shape of US Green card and all doors are going to be closed soon and considering Canada.. That is understandable... But living in US, stating to love USA and writing to drive others out of USA looks contradictory to me.. Hypocrates... US GC is broken and f@@cked up so what .. Try to fight it out as long as you can...And believe me not everbody's grapes are sour yet.
Other thing, with decision of corporates you can not take decisiion to unsettle your life.. Argument: Microsoft decides to go to Canada and is hirring you .. What can go wrong...many things can go wrong.. you do not know and many things cannot be proved.. With myself it already happened.. In year 2001 Bubble burst my then employer gave me a choice to move to Canada ( Exactly Microsoft kind of public declaration.. Company is also very prestigious and more or less you can consider it of the size of Microsoft).... I took decision not to go and so I was out of the company.. Some friends went there.. after 2 years laid off.. Those 2 years they got American salary on Canadian land (Dream, huh !!!!!!!!) ,, But then what after lay off.. One of them had to sit 6 months to get proper job.. Way less salary... Can this happen to everybody? May not be..But the bottom line is you will have to fiight out the hurdles.. Here you have GC Process hurdle.. In canada you may not have that but you may be having other 100 hurdles... What will you do then? WIll you go to Australia? ...There are 600 countries so at the most you can do 600 migrations :-) By the way both of my friends now want to come back to USA after getting citizenship and their families do not want to move as they have mentally fed up with this move from country to country.. I am here since 2001 and my family joined me in 2002. I came here at a fairly grown up age and the reason for coming here is mainly for a better life for my family. I don't make enough money to be able to send and invest in India. In fact I was sent money (more than $10K) a few times from back home.
But I do make enough money here to be able to live in a good house and have a couple of cars. In India I couldn't have dreamed of a second car (I did have a car in India) and it would have been impossible for my kids to have a car when they are 16. I know for sure I have secured the future of my kids better here in the US than what it could have been for them in India. We are educated people and we keep reading about the successes of the Ambani Borthers, Rahul Gandhi and others. Our family with average IQs and wealth can only read the news but can never have a chance to have a go and succeed like those BIG WIGS in India. Here in the US, we definitely have a chance, to become at least a millionaire before we retire. As for my kids, they could be rich at a much younger age.
My PD is Oct. 2003 EB2 India (filed everything in June 2007) and I have sustained the wait for 4 years and I am willing to take on the stress for may be one more year for my family by which time we all should have our GCs. Moving to Canada? - I would rather start my own consulting company in Canada and go there once in a while (preferably in the summer) to enjoy the weather and to take care of my business.

You are right. A lot of us came here for a better life. And yes it is a better life. I think Canada is a good option, but it is a lot harder to uproot and move, when you are sooo settled in the US.

That is right. Those who came here before 200 - 300 years ago and their descendants have built a strong nation, to which every one wants to immigrate. Those who waiting in line ( and working here ) also doing the nation building and feel who got here earlier built laws/rules to weed the later batch of immigrants.

While we must pursue the overall reforms,
i suggest that we also seek temporary relief seeking lifting of the ban on filing for 485 for the next 2-3 months... this will help most EB3 and EB2 (I/C/) who missed the 2007 window.
What are the chances of such a relief being provided?
Will a mail campaign work?..plz raise your hand if you are interested..;)

nozerd, what is pmt ? Also did you find out what are the total taxes that one has to pay say on an income of 100000 single/ 200000 married couple ? That would be very helpful if calculating one's take home pay.

I just got back from Canada yesterday. I am a PR holder landed in 2005. I had gone for my 8-11 yrs H1 stamping. Needless to say this trip I was very vigilant and observant about Toronto. Here are some thoughts.
1) When you enter Canada they will ask you to fill a customs/immigration form. On the form one question that is asked is " When were you last in Canada" also the form asks for your "current permanant address". So in my case I was last in Canada in May 2005 and I entered last week it aroused suspision. The officer asked me if I was within 2 to 5 yr room. I told him I was and I was using this trip to plan for our move. So after some questioning he let me in. I guess if that date was March 2007 instead of 2005 he may not have questioned me as much.
2) As far as lifestyle and products there is no products not available there. Every food item and consumer good is available in Canada. The grocery stores and their shelves look the same. Since the population is low most iotems are made in US and imported. Only way to know its a Canadian market is because by law all products need to be marked in English and French.
3) Malls etc are the same as US. Eaton Center or Vaughn Mills is no different then The Galleria or Katy Mills in Houston.
4) Housing is what you pay for it. It is definitely more expensive than Texas and Southern US but cheaper than California or NY. Rents are cheaper in run down areas and expensive in good areas ( duh !). In a major commercial area in a middle class building I was quoted $ 1000 for a bachelor and $ 1,200 for a 1 bedroom apt but this was all bills paid.
5) Jobs are fewer than US. Best thing to do is take a transfer with your company if they have offices there ( I know of 4 ppl who have done that). Basically if you have a US, Canadian or UK education you will be fine but iof your education is purely from India you may have a tougher time. A good option is to find a job in a border city and commute daily ( Windsor/Detroit or Foret Erie/Buffalo). I think this is a very good option if you can get a job in Detroit or Buffalo.
6) Taxes are high. I was told by many that whatever taxes you pay in US double them. Sales tax is 15% in ON where it is 8% in TX. Income tax is also higher. Higher taxes are a fact of life in Canada (no ifs ands or buts). In return you have a country where there is no fiscal or budgetary deficit and a very well funded social security system ( unlike US). You also have benefits like 9 months paid maternity leave, a pmt every month for every child you have and medical benefits.
7) Awesome public transport system. Gas is $ 1.04 or so a litrer when I was there. Insurance is expensivbe but not topo bad if you have a US license and good solid 5 yr US driving record. However its ridiculously high for non US or European immigrants.
So bottom line Canada is not US and comparing it to US is not fair. However its the closesnt to the US you will get in any other country. Its everyones personal decision and no one forces anyone to apply or mopve there. One could always takje a vacation/leave of absense and go try for a job there. Or else work in detroit/buffalo. Now detroit/buffalo is in US can you find job there ??????? or are they doomed too because of proximity to Canada:rolleyes:

Since the population is low most iotems are made in US and imported. Only way to know its a Canadian market is because by law all products need to be marked in English and French.
3) Malls etc are the same as US. Eaton Center or Vaughn Mills is no different then The Galleria or Katy Mills in Houston.
4) Housing is what you pay for it. It is definitely more expensive than Texas and Southern US but cheaper than California or NY. Rents are cheaper in run down areas and expensive in good areas ( duh !). In a major commercial area in a middle class building I was quoted $ 1000 for a bachelor and $ 1,200 for a 1 bedroom apt but this was all bills paid.
5) Jobs are fewer than US. Best thing to do is take a transfer with your company if they have offices there ( I know of 4 ppl who have done that). Basically if you have a US, Canadian or UK education you will be fine but iof your education is purely from India you may have a tougher time. A good option is to find a job in a border city and commute daily ( Windsor/Detroit or Foret Erie/Buffalo). I think this is a very good option if you can get a job in Detroit or Buffalo.
6) Taxes are high. I was told by many that whatever taxes you pay in US double them. Sales tax is 15% in ON where it is 8% in TX. Income tax is also higher. Higher taxes are a fact of life in Canada (no ifs ands or buts). In return you have a country where there is no fiscal or budgetary deficit and a very well funded social security system ( unlike US). You also have benefits like 9 months paid maternity leave, a pmt every month for every child you have and medical benefits.
7) Awesome public transport system. Gas is $ 1.04 or so a litrer when I was there. Insurance is expensivbe but not topo bad if you have a US license and good solid 5 yr US driving record. However its ridiculously high for non US or European immigrants.
So bottom line Canada is not US and comparing it to US is not fair. However its the closesnt to the US you will get in any other country. Its everyones personal decision and no one forces anyone to apply or mopve there. One could always takje a vacation/leave of absense and go try for a job there. Or else work in detroit/buffalo. Now detroit/buffalo is in US can you find job there ??????? or are they doomed too because of proximity to Canada:rolleyes:

The thing is - people are crazy about USA, no matter what - so if you leave someone else will come - thats the attitude here. Exploitation to the core. The way America was built is by slavery. America became such a great country only because of slavery. There were moments in past where people revolted and found liberty - and we are all on that path. Look at the Black civil rights moment etc.
The problem with the current immigration policy that the government is forcing the companies to outsource the HI-TECK jobs and needed skilled immigrants works like RNS to Canada, and other countries. These jobs could be taken by American maybe, but now they wont have that chance.
The job that suppose to exsit and be filled by american or immigrant in the teck industry is not going to exist in the US. Instead it's going to exist in Canada for an immigrant.
The US faces huge nursing shortage, nurses are going Canada and Australia, same for PT's. US is not going to get the tax money, social security nor the jobs. High paid jobs like HI-TECK and nurses,..ect get taxed more and now this tax is going to be in anther country.
MS started outsourcing, Oracle is following. Nurses & PT's educated in the US are leaving it. This current policy is not for the greater good of the country, it's by cheer of bureaucratic incompetence.
This is going to become more than just an immigration problem. This is going to hurt the economy& health care real bad if they do not fix it.

I can tell you how corrupt indian govts are from my personal experience.
If someone dies at ur home, to get the govt doctor come and give you clearance to take the body to burial it takes thousands of rupees. Police need no less either. Else your loved one will be waiting for those ***. If you have to claim ur loved ones insurance to take care of expenses during his death, offices play u around... They just want more money!!
